Alpha Centauri is a triple star system and the closest inhabited star system to Earth. Its two sunlike primary stars orbit one another at an average separation of roughly 24 AU, while the distant red dwarf Proxima Centauri travels far beyond the central pair.
The system contains multiple planets, with its principal inhabited world, Tellus, orbiting Alpha Centauri B. Early long-range observations identified the planet as a promising Earthlike candidate, and later probes confirmed that Tellus could support human life.
Unlike the massive colony fleets sent to more distant systems, the first manned missions to Alpha Centauri were built around smaller settlement groups. The system's proximity made repeated expeditions possible, allowing infrastructure, research outposts, and surface settlements to expand in stages rather than through a single migration wave.
Over the following decades, colonization accelerated. Tellus became the cultural and population center of the system, while the harsh inner worlds of Alpha Centauri B remained valuable primarily for study, resource assessment, and industrial observation.
Today, Alpha Centauri stands as one of humanity's most historically important extrasolar systems: the first nearby frontier beyond Sol, a proving ground for interstellar settlement, and a mature colony shaped by the strange rhythms of a neighboring binary sun.
